Villa in San Lorenzo a Merse

San Lorenzo a Merse is less than 15 km from Siena, one of Italy’s most storied cities, full of medieval and renaissance art and home to the infamous horse race, Il Palio. The town of San Lorenzo a Merse is a small village with winding streets, full of locals chatting in the main Piazza and children playing.

The house on via del Pizzicore is divided into three floors: two bedrooms, two bathrooms plus a shower room in white mosaic, a walk-in closet, kitchen and living- dining room, with a bread oven and a fantastic fireplace. The main living area has large windows with a balcony and glass terrace with a view of the valleys and the Tuscan hills.

The villa is totally renovated and restored respecting the original stone walls, exposed chestnut-wood beams and antique tiles, while introducing modern technology as well as art in the design of the staircase that turns as a sculpture from the ground floor to the third floor in travertine stone and wood. The large fireplace itself is a sculpture, extending from the living room to the bedroom on the third floor.

The fusion between antique and modern continues in the furnishing and decorating of the space, resulting in elegance and simplicity. Special tile, mosaic and stonework is used in the bathrooms and in the kitchen, which is designed with real cooks in mind. The house is equipped with new appliances including a television, radio, washing machine, refrigerator and telephone. The hot water and heating system is adjustable to individual needs.

Siglinda on Tuscany:

"In winter, since that is when we grow wheat, the hills are covered with the most vibrant emerald green. We love to eat and cook... For the holidays, you will be able to taste specialties of the local cuisine that you never had before.

Spring explodes in March, with all the wild flowers and mimosa blossoms. The fruit trees start to bloom then and reach their peak in April. It is time for fresh asparagus, artichokes, peas and all the new lettuces. May and June are fragrant with roses, lilacs, irises and peonies. Every house has flower pots and urns outside the door. July and August are opulent with fruits. Peaches, plums, cherrie, and apricots are picked ripe from the trees. It is the time to go swimming at the seashore and have a great fish dinner in Orbetello or Follonica.

In October and November people are making wine, collecting chestnuts and wild mushrooms in the forest... It is a splendid time to be there. Although San Lorenzo has a beautiful church, you shouldn't miss San Galgano, the most spiritual and gorgeous Gothic abbey in Tuscany. It is in the middle of the Tuscan hills a few miles on the road after Monticiano."
